More and more countries have realized the importance of hydrogen energy, including China where some cities have made plans to develop it. However, industry experts argue that blind enthusiasm is inadvisable, and rational development is obviously the wise thing to do.

The world’s hydrogen energy industry is to generate economic benefits of around US$4 trillion per year by 2050. China’s hydrogen energy industry is to experience two key periods – 2025-2035 and 2036-2050. In the first stage, the nation is to greatly decrease comprehensive costs of hydrogen energy, and establish a policy system to guide firms engaged in hydrogen energy and fuel cells. In the second stage, hydrogen energy is likely to become one of the most important energy sources in China. Meanwhile, the application of hydrogen energy and fuel cells is to be gradually propelled.

The original purpose to develop hydrogen energy is to reduce pollution and emissions of greenhouse gases. How to reach the original purpose? The key is to choose proper raw materials, ideally adopting non-fossil energy that will bring “zero emission” and “green hydrogen (the production is environmentally friendly)”. However, 96% of domestic hydrogen energy is currently produced by fossil energy sources.
