Recently, Chinacoal Erdos Energy & Chemical has kicked off its 1 million-ton syngas-to methanol technological transformation project, undertaken by China 11th Chemical Construction Company Limited (ELECO).

The project has a designed capacity of 1 263.2 kt/a MTO-based methanol, and seven by-products like 136.7 kt of liquefied natural gas (LNG), 32.6 kt of sulfur, and 31.1 kt of ammonium sulfate, with a total investment of RMB5.012 billion. The project is located in Tuke town, Wushen county of Ordos city in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Raw coal is produced by gasification of feedstock coal and then conversed in the presence of carbon monoxide, acid gas is then removed and sent to methane cryogenic separation device, and after the removal of methane, syngas is sent to synthetic unit to yield methanol. Coal gasification adopts BGL crushed coal pressurized gasification technology. Conversion and cooling adopt wide temperature sulfur-tolerant conversion technology. Purification adopts energy-saving semi-lean liquid low-temperature methanol washing technology. Methanol synthesis adopts Lurgi large-scale methanol synthesis technology. Cryogenic separation of methane uses mixed refrigerant and nitrogen compression cycle refrigeration technology.
