MIIT Assigns Backward Capacity Elimination Tasks to Various Provinces

China's Development and Reform Commission and the State Environmental Protection Administration jointly issued in 2007 a notice calling to eliminate backward capacity of, about 507 000 t/a of paper, 355 000 t/a of alcohol, 35 000 t/a of MSG and 8 000 t/a of citric acid nationwide in 2009. The adjustment and stimulus programs issued earlier this year also request to eliminate outdated capacities of iron and steel, nonferrous metals, light industry and textile in the next three years.
Aiming at these goals, on December 3rd, 2009 the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued a notice to assign the task of eliminating different outdated capacities to different provinces. The outdated capacity of calcium carbide is mainly concentrated in Shanxi province, electrolytic aluminum mainly in Henan and Jilin provinces, and glass all in Hebei province and citric acid all in Yunnan province. The notice requires that before the end of February 2010, every provincial government should report to MIIT the implementation results of its task for 2009.
