Unified Assessment of Environmental Behaviors in Yangtze River Delta

Recently, Jiangsu Provincial Environmental Protection Department, Shanghai Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau and Zhejiang Provincial Environmental Protection Department jointly issued a notice that in the Yangtze River Delta region, a working mechanism will be established for the unified evaluation and information release of corporate environmental behaviors to achieve the sharing of regional business environmental information. The three departments also published a list of 1 355 key local enterprises that need to open their environmental information. Among these enterprises, 720 were in Jiangsu province, 140 in Shanghai, and 495 in Zhejiang province, and many of them are chemical manufacturers.
It is reported that all the 1 355 enterprises are state-owned or provincial government controlled enterprises. The notice requires that from December 2009 to March 2010, local environmental protection departments in the delta region should carry out the evaluation of corporate environmental behaviors according to a procedure consisting of informing, filling forms, preliminary evaluation, feedback, notification and review. On the World Environment Day (June 5th, 2010), these three local environmental protection departments will publish the unified evaluation results of the 1 355 enterprises' environmental behaviors. They will report the results to related financial, business and securities supervision authorities and incorporate the results into the social credit system. Enterprises which are evaluated as green enterprises will have the priority to get the government's special funds for their environmental protection projects according to relevant state regulations.
