Chalco will Resume 90% Alumina Capacity in 2009

Luo Jianchuan, the vice president of Aluminum Corporation of China (Chalco), recently announced that Chalco plans to resume most of its suspended alumina units to reach an operating rate of about 90% by the end of 2009. Chalco's operating rate of alumina production line is around 67% now.
Xiong Weiping, the chairman of Chalco said that, the over-capacity of alumina as well as other aluminum products would be eased in the next two or three years.
Due to the slack demand for aluminum products and their low selling prices, Chalco suffered a loss of RMB3.52 billion in net profit in first half of 2009, contrasting to RMB2.39 billion of net profit in the same period of 2008.
