Sinopec Corp. Promotes Clean Chemical Production

Wang Tianpu, vice chairman and president of Sinopec Corp., said recently that the company has taken a lot of measures to promote clean chemical production.
In recent years, Sinopec Corp. has pushed forward structural adjustment and technological innovation actively so as to enhance production concentration and reduce energy and material consumption. After years of efforts, the company has basically formed three refining clusters in the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta and the Bohai Bay area. At the same time, it also shut down some outdated production facilities that feature small scale, high energy consumption, and heavy pollution. Since 2006, backward refining capacity and coal-fired boiler capacity have been phased out on a basis of 6.5 million t/a and 3 110 t/h respectively.
Moreover, Sinopec Corp. has developed and promoted some new advanced technologies to save energy and reduce pollution. In refining, it focuses on the promotion of technologies like optimized heat exchange routine and enhanced heat transfer in heating furnace. In chemical production, it mainly promotes absorption type heat pumps and twisted tape inserted tubes to enhance heat transfer and alike. The company also developed a set of water-saving and pollution-reducing technologies with which it can save water by 11.19 million tons every year and reduce sewage discharge by 12.79 million tons.
Sinopec Corp. also renovated feedstock route to fertilizer manufacturing facilities, oil-fired boilers and hydrogen production (by naphtha) plants, and changed the feedstock in them to coal/high-sulfur petroleum coke, high-sulfur petroleum coke and natural gas respectively. In this way, it not only reduces the production costs, but also optimizes the use of resources. At the same time, the company allocated more crude oil to its subsidiaries featuring low material and energy consumption as well as good comprehensive institutional framework, thus improving the comprehensive utilization of resources.
In accordance with each subsidiary enterprises' actual situation, Sinopec Corp. also set a series of quotas on water saving, energy saving and environmental protection for them every year, and make efforts to ensure that the quotas are reached.
Sinopec Corp. has been strengthening the comprehensive utilization of wastes, and also promoted the recovery and reutilization of a variety of waste resources such as flare gas, oil/gas, sewage, and waste oil.
