Huaneng Builds IGCC Demonstration Project in Tianjin

China Huaneng Group began construction on an IGCC (integrated gasification combine cycle) demonstration power project in Tianjin Lingang Industrial Zone on July 6th.
Compared to a traditional 300 megawatt coal-fired power plant, the Huaneng Tianjin IGCC power station could save about 70 000 tons of standard coal per year, and discharge only a tenth of polluting substances, said Huaneng vice general manager Wu Ruosi.
The Tianjin IGCC demonstration power project won approval from the National Development and Reform Commission in May 2009. It needs total investment of RMB2.1 billion, co-invested by GreenGen Co., Ltd and Tianjin Investment Co. under the share split of 75: 25. GreenGen is controlled by Huaneng. Under the plan, China will construct the first 250 MW IGCC power generation plant, with the first unit to be completed in 2011.
Huaneng is pushing forward a "green coal power" program, planning to build demonstration projects in 10 years in three terms. In the stage, the company will build the 250 MW IGCC project by 2011; in phase two, it will research and develop the core technology used in green coal power generation field; and in the last, it aims to build pilot green coal power generation projects with combined capacity of 400 MW, paving way for larger-scale commercialization.
