Jiangsu Speeds up Development of Biological Pesticides    

Recently experts from scientific research organizations such as Nanjing Agricultural University, Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Jiangsu Research Institute of Pesticides etc, as well as managers from biological pesticides enterprises, are invited together by Jiangsu Provincial Agriculture Department to discuss the issue of the development of biological pesticides.
   Biological pesticides are agricultural biological preparations which accords with China's current policy. Biological pesticides are derived from the nature with good compatibility with environments, easy decomposition, minimal residences as well as safety for human and animals. Meanwhile the raw materials required for the production of biological pesticides are all renewable biological resources, consistent with requirements of sustainable development. To develop bio-pesticide industry is an important mean for realization of target that 30 percent of chemical pesticides will be reduced to use in Taihu Lake region by 2012, which is put forward by Jiangsu provincial government. Compared with the chemical pesticide industry, the biological pesticide output is too small in the province, with production and use of bio-pesticides accounting for 0.5% and 4.8% of the total production and total consumption of pesticides respectively.
   Experts have analyzed deeply the constraint factors of development of the pesticide industry in Jiangsu province. Finally they all agreed that the biological pesticides should be developed rapidly with the opportunity that the central government encourages to develop biological industries and strictly treat with water pollution in Taihu Lake. For biological insecticides used to kill major agricultural pests, research and development as well as selection should be sped up in scientific research organizations and manufacturers, to increase the stability and fast potency of biological pesticides, expand the application scope and lower application costs. Through various approaches, policy and financial support from all levels of government should be strived for, to promote the development of bio-pesticide industry jointly, expand biological pesticide use and reduce chemical pesticide use.
    Jiangsu province has more than 500 pesticides manufacturers, ranking the first in China.
