Carbon in Sports

By Lily Wang

With the ever intense competition in sports, higher requirements are placed not only on athletes but also on professional sports equipments as well. Carbon fiber with its unique properties such as stability at very high temperatures, corrosion resistance, light weight and high strength is widely used in sports such as sailing, rowing, cycling, badminton, skiing, golf, archery, etc.
SGL Group is committed to exploiting further applications of its product in sports. To name a few, Porsche's high performance automotive brake is made of SGL Group's carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC), while SCOTT SPARK LTD Mountain Bike uses SGL Group's Carbon-Ceramic Brake Disc as well. What's more, the SGL Group is supporting the German Cycling Team for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
As the official partner of the "German House", the world's leading manufacturer of carbon and graphite products SGL Group - The Carbon Company - launched the "Carbon in Sports" SGL Business Lounge at Kempinski Hotel Beijing Lufthansa Center on August 8th.
2008 is the 10th anniversary of SGL Group in China. Beginning with "Carbon in Sports", SGL Group will fully launch the "Carbon in" campaign followed by "Carbon in Automotive", "Carbon in Aerospace", "Carbon in Energy" and "Carbon for Steel" in the future. SGL Group will also make efforts to support the scientific research and development related to carbon and graphite material in China.

Expand into wind energy markets

SGL Group expands in the wind energy growth market through acquiring 51% share of the rotor blade manufacturer Abeking & Rasmussen Rotec GmbH & Co KG. The joint venture will operate under the name "SGL Rotec GmbH & Co KG" and the target is to position SGL Rotec as a leading rotor blade manufacturer to expand into wind energy markets like China, India, Turkey, and North America by establishing local production sites.
