Sinopec Focus on Energy Conservation and Pollutant Reduction    

The crude oil output, the crude oil processing amount and the ethylene output in Sinopec Group have increased constantly. The comprehensive energy consumption per million RMB of production value is however down by 9.89% in the past three years. The average sulfur content in processed crude oil has increased from 0.9% to 1.03%. The total SO2 emission is however down by 8%.

Sinopec Group as a super large state-owned enterprise is either a big energy producer or a big energy consumer and has naturally attracted the attention of the whole society.
    "As a matter of fact, energy conservation and pollutant reduction have become a usual practice in the production and operation of the Group," said an executive from Sinopec Group. "We have been taking all kinds of measures to reduce energy consumption, material consumption and pollutant emission. As a super large energy and chemical enterprise, doing so is duty."
   The dissemination of air pre-heating technology in ethylene crackers is an important energy conservation project conducted by Sinopec in recent years. Renovation to 63 crackers has already been completed. How about the effect of this technology? After the installation of 24 new air pre-heaters in No. 2 cracker of Yangzi Petrochemical Company Ltd. nearly 7 000 tons of fuel can be saved a year and the consecutive operating cycle can also be extended.
   From 2005 to 2007 the company made an investment of RMB11.4 billion to construct major energy conservation and pollutant reduction projects. Special energy conservation projects were executed in oilfield enterprises. 32 low-temperature heat utilization projects were conducted in refineries.
   These major energy conservation projects have brought remarkable effect. Take Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co., Ltd. for instance. The low-temperature heat linkage between the PX (p-xylene) unit and the II catalytic unit has reduced the air cooling load of the PX unit and its energy consumption is down by 3.5 - 4 kilogram of standard fuel per ton of product.
    At the time of the quality upgrading renovation made to oil products in Beijing Yanhua Petrochemical Company Ltd., Guangzhou Petrochemical Company Ltd. and Wuhan Petrochemical Company Ltd., 6.50 million t/a outdated crude oil primary processing capacity is eliminated, the average capacity of refineries is increased from 5.15 million t/a to 5.70 million t/a and the total ethylene capacity is increased from 5.55 million t/a to 6.30 million t/a.
   Through structural optimization and readjustment, the average comprehensive energy consumption in refining enterprises is down by 3.4% in the past three years and the fuel and power energy consumption in ethylene cracking units is down by 1%.
   From 2005 to 2007, the crude oil output, the crude oil processing amount and the ethylene output in Sinopec Group increased constantly. The comprehensive energy consumption per million RMB of production value was however down by 9.89%, equivalent to a reduction of 8.10 million tons of standard coal. The comprehensive energy consumption in refining was down by 3.36%. The comprehensive energy consumption in ethylene production was down by 2.17%. Compared with 2005, the COD emission in 2007 was down by 11.92%. The average sulfur content in processed crude oil increased from 0.9% to 1.03%, but the total SO2 emission was down by 8%.
