Liaoning Shut Down 699 Atmosphere-Polluting Enterprises     

In 2007, Liaoning province shut down 699 atmosphere-polluting enterprises and the emission of sulfur dioxide was reduced by 49 000 tons.
   As a traditional industrial base, Liaoning has a high proportion of heavy industrialization causing a serious pollution to the environment. According to the program made by the province, compared with the end of the Tenth five-year Plan period (2001-2005) the emission of sulfur dioxide will be reduced by 12% and the emission of chemical oxygen demand (COD) will be reduced by 12.9% in 2010. Economic growth factors being considered, the reduction proportion of these two pollution indexes will be more than 50%. The situation of emission reduction will therefore be quite severe.
   Liaoning therefore made greater efforts in the rectification of polluting sources in 2007. The movement of optimizing urban industrial distribution was launched, and the relocation and renovation of major industrial enterprises was conducted in Shenyang, Dalian and Fushun. The clean production assessment has already been implemented on more than 700 enterprises in the province.
   According to the director of Liaoning Environmental Protection Bureau, Liaoning will further promote the emission reduction of pollutants in 2008 and withhold the approval of projects that do not use advanced processes for clean production.
