New Technology for Coal Based MEG

Fujian Institute of Research on the Structures of Matter (FIRSM), CAS has developed a new technology for coal based MEG (mono ethylene glycol) in collaboration with Shanghai Jinmei Chemical New Technology Co., Ltd. A 200 000 t/a MEG project using the new process and the core catalyst preparation technology has been launched in Tongliao Economic and Technological Development Zone, Inner Mongolia. The project is due to be completed and go on stream at the end of 2008. (CCR2007, No. 19)
Through strenuous efforts for nearly 30 years, FIRSM has finally developed the key technology for core catalyst used in the coal based MEG production. The process uses industrial-grade CO, NO, hydrogen, oxygen and alcohol as raw materials. The production cost is reduced remarkably. The technology has won invention patents in China.
The process technology is in line with the feature of coal based resources and urgent need of utilizing brown coal in China. It is especially suitable to be used in Inner Mongolia with very rich reserves of brown coal. The successful implementation of the process will produce significant implications on energy and chemical sectors in China.
