Dow-SAWS Project Achieves Significant Progress

Results in 2007 for the project on the safe management of hazardous chemicals, jointly conducted by China's State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) and The Dow Chemical Company, have recently revealed significant progress at fostering and promoting a better understanding and awareness among small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from various industries nationwide on the importance of chemical safety management. Jim McIlvenny, President of Dow Asia Pacific & Greater China, said, "Dow is a leader in sustainable development, and this project is a clear demonstration of our commitment to our 2015 Sustainability Goals in China."
SAWS and Dow chose nineteen SMEs engaged in either storing or transporting liquid chlorine or liquid ammonia from Shandong, Jiangsu, Hebei and Henan provinces to begin the project in the beginning of 2006. During the first year, there were 18 training sessions delivered to these enterprises, with 2 000 staff trained in hazardous chemicals supervision. The "Chlorine Safety Management Manual" published by the American Association of Chlorine was translated into Chinese, serving as an important reference for implementing chlorine and alkali production safety standardization for China's enterprises.
With the second year of this program officially underway, 15 enterprises were chosen from liquid chlorine and liquid ammonia production and hazardous chemicals transportation industries to carry out the next phase of the project.
