Water Pollution in Jiangsu

On July 2nd, 2007 water intake in Jiangsu Shuyuan Water Works
was polluted by unknown pollution source from the upstream of
New Yihe River so that the water supply was cut off in Shuyang,
Suqian, Jiangsu province. More than 200 000 people were affected.
According to the director general of Shuyang Environmental
Protection Bureau, water quality investigation suggested that
ammonia/nitrogen content far exceeded the national standard. It
is released that illegal discharge from chemical enterprises
located at the upstream of New Yihe River resulted in the
pollution.
After effective measures taken by the local government,
including diluting the polluted water source with water
transferring from Hongze Lake, the water supply in Shuyang
resumed to normal on July 4th, 2007.
