Chemical Equipment Collapses in Jiaozuo   
On November 13th, 2006 a settling tank collapsed in No. 2 Alumina
Plant of China Aluminum Co., Ltd. (CHALCO) Zhongzhou Branch
located in Jiaozuo, Henan province. The accident caused 3 deaths,
5 injuries and 2 missing. With the height and diameter of 31
meters and 18 meters respectively, No. 1 settling tank first
collapsed, adjacent to which another two settling tanks then
collapsed in No. 2 Alumina Plant. Two workers were working in
an operation room and several workers were maintaining the
settling tank when the accident broke out. The operation room
is right on the bridge connecting those 3 settling tanks.  
   Up till November 16th, 2 missing people were still not found
yet. Further investigation is being conducted with rescue work
going on today.

Explosion in Shanghai Huayi Acrylic Acid
On November 12th, 2006 an explosion took place at a reactor in
Shanghai Huayi Acrylic Acid Co., Ltd. located in Pudong district,
Shanghai. The accident made 3 workers get injure in the
neighboring plant. Shanghai Huayi Acrylic Acid Co., Ltd. is
jointly invested by Shanghai Huayi Group and Sinopec Shanghai
Gaoqiao Petrochemical Corporation. Specific cause of the
accident is being investigated. Major products in the company
include acrylic acid and acrylates.

Explosion in Ningxia Zhongda Chemicals
On November 7th, 2006, an explosion broke out at a carbide
furnace in Ningxia Zhongda Chemicals Co., Ltd. in Zhongwei,
Ningxia province. The accident made 12 people burnt by the fire.
According to the preliminary investigation, the accident is
caused by the broken electrode.
   Leading products in Ningxia Zhongda Chemical Co., Ltd.
include pig iron, liquid ammonia and carbide, etc.

Hydrogen Sulfide Poisoning in Huaian
On November 5th, 2006 a hydrogen sulfide poisoning accident
happened in a chemical plant in Huaiyin District, Huaian,
Jiangsu province. The accident caused 1 death and 2 injuries.
One worker carelessly entered the reaction kettle against rule,
losing his life. Two fellow workers also entered to rescue him.
The plant was forced to stop production by local departments for
rectifying after the accident.

Chlorine Leakage in Degussa Sanzheng Fine Chemicals
On November 3rd, 2006 chlorine leakage happened in Degussa
Sanzheng (Yingkou) Fine Chemicals Co., Ltd. located in Lunan
town of Yingkou, Liaoning province of northeastern China. The
leakage accident resulted in more than 71 injuries, including
workers at the scene and local residents. The amount of ammonia
leakage is around 1 ton. According to the monitor made by Yingkou
Environmental Protection Bureau, the accident didn't cause air
pollution and the content of harmful gas didn't overpass the
standard.

Ammonia Leakage in Hubei
On November 1st, 2006 ammonia leakage happened on a liquid
ammonia transmission pipeline in Nitrogen Fertilizer Plant of
Hubei Huangmailing Phosphorus Chemical Group Corporation
located in Dawu County, Xiaogan, Hubei province. The accident
caused 1 death, 6 injuries and 20 000 residents' emergency
evacuation.
   It is released by a general manager assistant of the company
that the amount of ammonia leakage is around 10 tons. On the same
day, the ammonia/nitrogen content and PH value of the local water
body exceeded the normal standard. After some effective measures
taken by the local government, both of the indexes returned to
the normal standard. Main products of Hubei Huangmailing
Phosphorus Chemical Group Corporation include phosphate rock,
normal super-phosphate, etc.
