Akzo Nobel Develops Advanced Coatings

During the 1990's International Paint, a subsidiary of Akzo
Nobel, acquired the leading fireproofing brand Chartek which has
been successfully used to protect critical areas in the Oil &
Gas industry for over 30 years. International Paint has advanced
the technology of Chartek to invent Interchar that can be applied
to building industry. The fireproofing feature of Interchar is
made possible by "intumescent". It will swell up and provide a
tough and stable layer over the steel in fire. It can be applied
to structural steel - in as little as two coats - and capable
of offering up to four hours of fire protection.
Another advantage of Interchar is that it can support
off-site application. This will avoid project delays and reduces
health and safety issues. In addition, Interchar coatings do not
impact the overall shape of the steel, allowing for intricate
and architecturally innovative designs.
