Triazophos

Triazophos is an organophosphorus insecticide and acaricide
with high effect and broad spectrum. It has strong contact
poisoning and great permeability to plant tissues. It is usually
used to control cutworms, noctuids, plant nematodes, pine moths
and Lepidoptera pests in fruit trees and vegetables.

Substitution for high-toxicity pesticides brings opportunities
to triazophos

More than 20 companies in China made the production of triazophos
technical in 2005 and the total capacity was more than 30
thousand t/a. Major producers include Zhejiang Xinnong Chemical
Co., Ltd., Guangxi Yiduoshou Biotech Co., Ltd., Shanghai
Pesticide Plant and Hubei Xianlong Chemical Co., Ltd.
   The number of companies making the registration of triazophos
increases with the enforced unfolding of the substitution for
high-toxicity pesticides. One hundred and fifty-six companies
have made the registration of single-component triazophos
formulations at the Ministry of Agriculture. Two hundred and
eighty-three companies have made the registration of 31 compound
triazophos formulations.
   Triazophos has already gained popular use in rice, cotton,
fruit tree and vegetable planting areas in Jiangsu, Zhejiang,
Fujian, Shandong and Henan provinces. With the gradual
withdrawal of high-toxicity pesticides from the market, the
consumption of triazophos in other provinces will also increase
constantly. The sales amount reached 5 thousand tons (containing
100% triazophos) in 2005. The market volume of triazophos is
expected to further expand after 2007.

New process reduces production cost

Chinese organizations that have mastered the triazophos
synthesis technology include Farm Crops Institute of the Chinese
Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Research Institute of Pesticides,
Fudan University and Jiangsu Research Institute of Pesticides.
The yield of triazophos in China is usually around 65%. Zhejiang
University of Technology has made major breakthroughs in the
research of triazophos production process. The cost of
1-phenyl-3-hydroxy-1,2,4-triazole (intermediate) synthesis
reduces by RMB5 000 per ton, a new compound phase-transfer
catalyst is used and the reaction yield in the key step of the
triazophos synthesis reaches more than 95%, being 10% higher
than traditional processes. The production cost has therefore
reduced drastically.

Water-based formulations conforming to environmental
protection requirements

The project of 20% triazophos water-based emulsion, a new
environmental friendly formulation developed by Anhui Research
Institute of Chemical Industry, has entered the stage of
commercialization. A 2 thousand t/a production units has already
been constructed. It is an upgraded product to replace
traditional triazophos emulsifiable concentrates. Water is used
to replace organic solvents and both the environmental pollution
and the production cost can therefore be greatly reduced. Field
tests prove that the product has excellent effect on the control
of various pests in rice, cotton and vegetables. All technical
indexes of the product are far superior to triazophos
emulsifiable concentrates of the same dosage.
