Butadiene-Styrene Latex Preparation Technology

The butadiene-styrene latex preparation method developed by
Research Institute of Jilin Petrochemical Company Ltd. recently
won the invention patent of the state. The technology is
specially intended to be used in the synthesis of
butadiene-styrene latex with large particle size.
Butadiene-styrene latex units in major producers of China
usually use the high-temperature emulsion polymerization
process. The particle size of latex is 40 – 80 nanometer. The
small particle size of the polymer has restricted the
application coverage. Butadiene-styrene latex with large
particle size is a highly-functional synthetic product. It can
maintain the flow state even with a high solid content. It can
therefore be extensively used in papermaking, carpet, rubber,
asphalt and ABS resin sector.
Butadiene-styrene latex with large particle size is usually
produced through the two-step swelling process or the micro (non)
gravity seed polymerization process. Compared with methods
being used today, the technology for the synthesis of
butadiene-styrene latex with large particle size developed by
the institute has the advantages of mild reaction conditions,
simple process flow, convenient raw material availability and
low production cost. Preliminary application tests show that
products prepared with the technology have a particle size of
300 – 1000 nanometer and can be extensively used in the
production of coatings, adhesives, foamed rubber and ABS resin.
