Sea Water Desalination Project Trial Operation

With a total investment of RMB200 million, the sea water desalination project of Huaneng Yuhuan Power Plant has recently put into trial operation in Zhejiang province. This project can generate 1 440 t/h fresh water by first adopting "bio-membrane" sea water desalination technology in the world. Since the waste heat producing by the power plant can make the water temperature increase by 9-16 degree centigrade, the energy consumption decrease accordingly and the cost of sea water desalination basically equals that of industrial water.    Because fresh water resource is in short supply in Yuhuan county of Zhejiang province, 8 million tons of fresh water was needed in Huaneng Yuhuan Power Plant every year, which all comes from the desalination of sea water. After the overall completion of the project, it can produce around 35 000 tons of fresh water per day. Therefore, it can not only supply the plant with water for industry and living, but also meet the needs of neighboring residents.
