Environmental Protection Emergency Project Launched in Lanzhou

A super large environmental protection emergency project with the greatest investment in China has recently been launched in Lanzhou of Gansu province. CNPC plans to provide RMB1.5 billion in 3 years to Lanzhou Petrochemical Company Ltd. for the use in the environmental protection emergency project to turn the waterborne park into an environment protection emergency buffer pond. The first phase of the project has an investment of RMB500 million.    Lanzhou Petrochemical Company Ltd. plans to put RMB500 million in 2006 in the renovation and expansion of a pollution emergency buffer project and the construction of a complete sewage emergency buffer system. Based on the maximum leakage amount, the buffer system can digest all leaked sewage. The flow of polluted water into the Yellow River can therefore be prevented and the safe water utilization for residents in Lanzhou and the lower reaches can be guaranteed.    The project will connect all sewage pipelines in the western zone and the eastern zone of the company. The total length of pipelines will be more than 20 km. Four buffer ponds with a total volume of 300 000 m3 will also be constructed.
