Tsinghua University Develops Full-Vanadium Redox Fluid Battery

The energy density of clean energies such as wind energy and solar energy has remarkable changes with the time. There are therefore drastic fluctuations of the power output in generating units. The requirements on sustained, stable and controllable power energy can hardly be satisfied. The full-vanadium redox fluid battery (VRB) recently developed by Tsinghua University can avoid the cross contamination caused by the mutual permeation between different action substances. The product has achieved the storage and release of power energy through the mutual transformation between vanadium ions in different valence states. In numerous chemical power sources, it is the only battery system composed of one single element. It can convert the unstable input of power energy into a continuous, safe and reliable output. Major energy storage technical problems in the power generation by wind energy and solar energy are therefore solved. The development and utilization of the technology in the project can generate a market demand of several billion RMB a year.
