International Environmental Protection Projects
               to Be Implemented in Chongqing
To effectively protect the ecological  environment  in  the
Upper  Reaches  of the Yangtze River and the Three  Gorges
Reservoir, Chongqing will cooperate with  the  World  Bank
and Japan  in  implementing    environmental    protection
projects with an investment of over 13 billion yuan.
According to  Chongqing  Environmental  Protection  Bureau,
     there    are    3  environmental  protection  projects
including  the  project  of  industrial pollution  control
and enterprise reform in Chongqing which is  already    in
implementation and the project  of  urban  environment  in
Chongqing  and  the project of China- Japan  environmental
cooperation demonstrative city  which  are  to  be    soon
implemented.   Both  sides  will    jointly      construct
  environmental  protection  units,   launch  environmental
  research    activities  and  develop  new   environmental
protection technologies. The World Bank   and  Japan  will
provide a loan of over 6 billion yuan and Chongqing   City
will also raise over 6 billion yuan. These projects   will
effectively  improve air  quality,   intensify  industrial
pollution  control  and    upgrade    water  drainage  and
garbage treatment facilities in Chongqing.
Chongqing  will  also   conduct   extensive   environmental
protection  cooperation with Denmark and the United Kingdom.
The loan from the  Danish  Government will be   used    to
construct  the  first  urban  sewage   treatment    plant.
Cooperation will also be made with the British Government,
  Toulouse  City Government  of  France  and  the  Economic
Analysis and Research  Institute   of  Norway  in  various
research fields of environmental protection.
