Tar Processing Project Starts Production

The first phase of 330 000 t/a tar processing project in Shanxi Jinyao Coking Co., Ltd. started production recently. The project is designed by the Second Design Institute of Chemical Industry.    The project includes 6 units for tar distillation, scrubbing decomposition, industrial naphthalene, asphalt shaping, crude anthracene and oil depot. The design is made and the main production equipment is manufactured by China itself. The automatic control system can exercise supervision to the whole production process. The project is one of the tar processing units with the largest single-unit capacity in China.    The coke output was more than 80.0 million tons, and the coal tar output was about 2.0 million tons in Shanxi in 2004. Abundant raw materials can therefore be provided to large-scale tar processing. Only the tar processing unit in Shanxi Hongte Coal Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. had a capacity of 400 000 t/a after the renovation last year. Most of other tar processing units only have a capacity of less than 80 000 t/a. Linfen is one of the major coke production bases in Shanxi and the coal tar output is more than 600 000 tons a year. There were only a few tar processing enterprises with a capacity of 20 000 - 30 000 t/a in Linfen in the past and unprocessed tar was exported as raw material or used as fuel. 　　The first phase of the tar processing project in Jinyao Coking Co., Ltd. has a capacity of 165 000 t/a. The second phase will soon start construction. It will include a 165 000 t/a tar processing unit, a 100 000 t/a modified asphalt unit and a 50 000 t/a fuel oil blending unit. In the next 3 - 5 years a 200 000 t/a delayed coking unit, a needle coke unit and a 40 000 t/a high-quality carbon black unit in the third phase will be completed and put on stream. The company will become a first-rate coal chemical base in China at that time.
