A central concern of global energy and development policies since 2010, renewables have become the world’s primary source of new power generation capacity (covering 62% in 2018), accounting for 26% of global power supply in 2019 (57% in 2030), as detailed in 10 Years: Progress to Action, a booklet produced for the 10th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

In 2019, around 67% of pledges (NDCs, i.e. Nationally Determined Contributions) set targets for renewables, which must grow faster to meet climate goals. Global installed capacity of renewables was 2.4 TW in 2019, and need to reach 7.7 TW in 2030 in accordance with temperature control goals in the Paris Agreement.
