China and Russia Jointly Launch Yamal LNG Project

Regarded as the “energy pearl” inside the Arctic Circle, the giant Yamal liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, jointly launched by China and Russia, began operation on December 8, 2017.
Located on the Yamal Peninsula, the Yamal LNG plant is the world’s largest integrated project for natural gas development, liquefaction, transportation and sale in the Arctic region. Russian President Vladimir Putin also attended the ceremony that day.
Jiangqi, general manager of CNPC Russion Branch, said that Yamal LNG is the largest investment project of Sino Russian economic and trade cooperation in recent year. Besides the CNPC, China’s financial institutions also participate in this project, and the future transportation of LNG, especially exporting to China, will be undertaken by China’s shipping company.
As the important pivot of the so-called “Silk Road on Ice”, the Yamal LNG project also becomes first cooperation of overall industrial chain between China and Russia through the Arctic. It will not only promote the development of Russia’s energy industry and border areas, but also enrich China’s clean energy supply, accelerating the structure optimization of energy.
The Yamal LNG plant is expected to have three production lines by 2019 with a total capacity of 4 million tonnes of LNG per year.
