RMB23.5 Billion to Raise Energy Efficiency

Chinese government has arranged to spend RMB23.5 billion in 2007 for raising energy efficiency and cutting pollutant emissions, a senior finance official said on November 26th, 2007.
"Of the fund, RMB7 billion has been arranged as grants to encourage major energy-efficient projects," said Zhang Shaochun, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Finance, at a national conference on energy efficiency.
He said that another RMB6.5 billion had been arranged to be spent in building or upgrading pipeline networks for waste water treatment in the central and western regions, and the remainder of the fund is used for elimination of out-dated production capacities, monitoring pollution and control of river and lake pollution.
"The fundsare provided to provinces based on the total length of the networks and emission cuts in chemical oxygen demand (COD)," Mr. Zhang said.
Chinese government has set a target of reducing energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by around 20% during the 2006-2010 period, or 4% each year, and cutting major pollutants by 10% by 2010.
