1.35% GDP Planned for Environmental Protection

The Chinese government will invest 1.35% of its gross domestic product (GDP) each year in environmental protection for the next three years.
The State Council, China's cabinet, publicized a belated Five-year Environmental Protection Program for 2006 to 2010 on November 26th, 2007.
"Most of the investment will go to treating water pollution," said Zou Shoumin, director of the Chinese Academy for Environmental Planning.
He estimated the government would spend RMB640 billion on treating water pollution and RMB600 billion on air pollution.
The Program sets out guidelines, major tasks and measures for the government to tackle pollution.
As part of the Program, China aims to cut its chemical oxygen demand (COD), a major index of water pollution, in 2010 by 10% from 2005 and sulfur dioxide emissions also by 10%.
By 2010, 75% of China's large cities will enjoy more than 292 days of good air quality (air quality level II or better) every year.
