CNOOC Starts CO2-Based Plastic Project

The ceremony for starting the project of CO2-based degradable
plastic chlorinated polypropylene (PPC) jointly funded by China
National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) and Changchun
Institute of Applied Chemistry CAS (CIAC) was held in Dongfang
Chemical City, Dongfang, Hainan province on July 31st, 2007. The
project uses the patent technology developed by CIAC itself. The
design capacity is 3 000 t/a degradable plastic and the total
investment is estimated to be RMB152.2 million. Production is
expected to start in June 2008 and China BlueChemical Ltd. will
be in charge of the project construction.
Major raw materials waste gas CO2 and propylene oxide have
copolymerization in presence of catalyst to generate CO2
copolymer PPC. PPC is a new fully-biodegradable environmental
friendly product with high added value. It can be completely
degraded into water and CO2 and has excellent transparency,
degradability, high blocking (oxygen-blocking) and biological
compatibility. After modification and processing, it can be used
in injection-molded and extrusion-molded products, fiber
products and blowing-molded products to replace various
non-degradable products in pharmaceutical, food and
agricultural sectors.
CNOOC was for the first time in its history listed in the
Fortune Global 500 holding the 469th place 2007.
