Tryptophan is the third major feed-grade amino acid next to methionine and lysine. It has also gained extensive applications in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and health product sectors in recent years. It is reported that the output of L-tryptophan in the world was around 4 000 tons in 2009. The consumption proportion was 20% for medicines, 30% for food and 50% for feed.
